GAANN Fellowship Q&A
Please submit questions to Dr. Stephen Huang at shuang@cs.uh.edu.
Q: Can the followship be renewed?
A: Yes, it is renewable within the three-year funding period (2007-2010). After the period,
GAANN Fellow will be eligiable for teaching assistantship or research assistantship.
Q: How much is the stipend?
A: It depends. This is a need-based financial aid, so different student
may receive different stipend. Once you completes the FAFSA, UH's financial
Aids office will determine the amount that you qualifies (using tuition,
cost-of-living in Houston, etc. as factors). Due to the low tuition and living expenses,
don't expect to get $30,000 per year. A more realistic number is around $20,000
per year at UH.
Q: Can I be an RA/TA at the same time?
A: Yes, but the income from the RA/TA will decrease your "need" in FAFSA.
Q: What are eligible educational expenses?
A: Books, materials, or supplies required in the course of study,
Computer hardware and software,
Membership fees of professional associations,
Travel (domestic or international) and per diem to professional association meetings and registration fees,
and other expenses incurred in research.
Q: Is there a limit on the educational expenses?
A: Certainly. There is a limit on the educational expanses for each fellow each year.
Q: How many courses do I have to teach as a GAANN fellow?
A: Only one during the entire fellowship period. We would like the
fellow to take a course in teaching first and then teach one course
the following semester.
Q: What is the best way for
someone to submit a letter of recommendation on my behalf?
A: Do it in one of the three ways below:
(1) Send a hard copy to Dr. Stephen Huang, (2) Send a
scanned letter to Dr. Huang by email, or (3) Send an email from the
professor's university email address.
Please note that we have access to your application file. If the
letters are in the file, there is no need to send additional letter.
The University of Houston is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution. Women and underrepresented minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.
