12/16, 4:25p 6.2M very easy Allen SPC3 3/7 Rare Sunday late afternoon run after a lot of rain earlier, finishing a week of 40.0 miles; T=70-68; H=80-83%. Did not feel and run well the first 4 miles of the run; the main cause of problem was not the warm conditions or yesterday's 16M run, but rather, I believe, due to the Edibichlor medication, I took 8 hours ealier, which made me dehydrated and was tough on my digestion: no more Edibichlor on days when running in the afternoon or the day before a hard workout!
12/17, 6p 16min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching; worked too much on the grant proposal and had to finish grading Tuesday; therefore, I decided to replace Tuesday's speedwork with a 9M run on Wednesday in Las Vegas.
12/19, 3:10p 9.0M m:4M 81:18 [41:30|39:48] Las Vegas WR15 5/3 Bellagio-Flamingo Road(West)-passing_JonesRoad-to_Redwood-&_back; had a so-so run, but picked up the pace a lot on the way back; had to navigate a lot of pedestrians on the first&last 0.5 miles. It was almost dark when I finished, with the Bellagio fountains just going off, when I returned to the Bellagio.
12/20, 12:30p 5.4M easy Las Vegas, Nevada GLYC 3/2 T=43; quite a horrible run route-wise, running in a lot of deadends when I did not succeed to connect to Flamingo road twice and Harmon does not have much of sidewalks, and it is difficult to get into the Bellagio when running the back_Strip road, as the Bellagio has only one tourist entrace: I had to beg that they would let me go through the employee entrace on the back of the hotel!
12/22, 7:40a 21M easy 3:15:53 (81:01 Bellagio via Strip to Flamingo Rd. then going east to 217; 23:39 going north-west on Western Beltway Trail and turning off Town Center Drive (with a 3 min. addon, making up for taking an too early exit from the Beltway Trail) going north to Desert Inn, 1:02:14 continuing on Desert Inn Rd. going east to Decatur, 9:58 on S. Decator going south to Flamingo, 18:58 going east on Flamingo back to the Bellagio) Las Vegas, Nevada WR15 7/3 T=36-47, H=54-35%; with water carrier, running the first 9 all mildly uphill miles at 9:45 pace and averaging 8:45 pace for the rest of the run. I decent run in the second half—I had deal with a lot of traffic lights, uneven footing, a lot of entrances and ran with the water carrier, and saw the Punk Rock group Social Distortion—the singer of this group is really good—the night before, standing and dancing for more than 3 hours in the LV House of Blues. I felt fine the rest of the day, and still saw the late show of O which was quite enjoyable and artistic: sort of a water ballet! It looks to me that Las Vegas is a very runner unfriedly city, probably one of the worst of the bigger cities in the US: there is very little useful information where to run on the internet, and the few running clubs that exist do not respond to e-mail. Anyhow, using Mapquest and some older, short running routes I found in the internet I designed a completely new long run route myself which worked out fine; in general, going west from the Strip Desert Inn, Colson and likely Sahara are the best streets to run on!
12/23, 11:40a 5.6M easy 51:48 (26:30 25:18) Las Vegas, Nevada GLYC 3/6 T=47+ and partly cloudy; running Flamingo west again, then north at Valley View then west on Desert Inn a little beyond Arville St. then going back via Wynn Rd. Kind of stiff and tight, but loosened up a little on the last 20 minutes. This concludes at 41 miles week, that was more like a 45 mile week, considering all the walking I did in Las Vegas We.-Su.! I will be seeing Absinthe at Caesar's Palace tonight!
12/25, 12:30p 6.2M easy 56:40 (9:25|8:50-pace) Allen PEG28 3/6 T=68,H=45% sunny and very windy; 179.2p: gained 2 pounds in Las Vegas!
12/26, 10:30a 7.0M 5x800 f|s 4:02 3:56 3:54 3:45 4:02 (7:51-pace) MemPa PURFL 4/4 I decided to run 3 hours later, but it was still quite cold (T=42) with a very cold wind; ran fine, except I ran the 4th 800 too fast, and therefore slowed on the fifth!
12/28, 1:45p 6.8M easy 1:02:12 UH_DT PEG28 3/6 Last run for PEG28; ran the UH-Downtown route with a 1.3M addon; somewhat struggling with all the food I ate at 10a in the morning—having a big Chinese Breakfast meeting Ruth at Central China on Bellaire in China Town.
12/29, 6p 30min Y-STR**2-R Yoga+Strenth+Stretching & 15 minutes rowing.
12/30, 6:30a 17M easy 2:29:47 (8:48-pace; 1:37:07(11M RivOk 42:38(L)-23:51-30:35)-26:00(3M)-26:41(3M)) RivOkMemPa WR15 6/3 T=36-41; H=60-49%; sunny and then mostly cloudy; 11M BCRR Sunday Run Route with 6M in Memorial Park added! Ran with a big BCRR group with 7-10 people and then ran 5M with Wendy who showed up late and who is happy to leave for Qingdao, China tonight, spending 2 weeks with her family. 177.2p.
1/1, 7:45a 6.4M easy Shoal Creek, Austin GLYC 3/6 Somewhat beaten up, running kind of slowly!
1/2, 8a 9.8M easy on hilly route. 90:23—the time is misleading, as had to do road scouting frequently slowing down or switch sides of the road to avoid getting hit by a car on Stratford and Redbud. TownL, Austin WR15 5/5 Running a different, quite hilly variation of Townlake route (Hyatt-BartonSpr-Congress-TLTN:to_Mopac1-Stratford-Redbud-LakeAustin-TLTS:to_Hyatt) with breakfast afterwards at Magnolia Cafe—this time at the Congress Av. location: a long tradition! The Stratford-Redbud-LakeAustin loop has 4.2 miles; had a lot of problems with the uphills, did not make the first very steep uphill without walking and was breathing hard at some stage, so I decided to rest for 2 minutes. Outside of right ankle quite sensitive and sore today! T=35-37 H=72% with very cold wind and cloudy!
1/3, 7:30a 6.6M very easy TownL, Austin WR15 5/5 Mostly running the Congress Av. Bridge Longhorn Dam loop; moved Friday's run today, and the planed 4M tempo run to the weekend. Kind of tired muscles for yesterday's hilly run; I therefore took it easy on a nice sunny morning with a lot rowing boats on Town Lake, as they were running 2's today— perhaps running three days in a row should be avoided; right outer ancle still sore, but at least did not get worse.
1/5, 7:15a 8M t:4.4M 1:09:15 (8:21|8:08 (?) on the 36 minute tempo run part) Utopia, Texas WR15 3/6 On Texas 189 between Utopia and Savinal; T=40-41, H=93-90% and cloudy; ran fine, although lower back was slightly sore; this was the last harder workout—the Houston Marathon training is basically over: the tapering can begin! This week I still ran 31 miles, after running 37 and 41 the two weeks before. WR15 has 255.3M at the time the Houston Marathon.
1/7, 7:30a 5M easy Castroville, Texas GLYC 3/4 T=34; H=86%; From Hotel Alsace on old 90 via Houston to town and back on Washington: needed to add a 0.8M addon—the town is even too small for a short run—with a last mile climb.
1/7, 6p 16min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strenth+Stretching
1/9, 4p 16min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strenth+Stretching; 176.6p.
1/10, 7a 5.3M ftl: 7x2min f|s Allen SPC3 4/6 T=62+ & humid; had to run today, tried running yesterday at 9a and noon, but decided to move run to today due to strong rain! That's it as far as running before the marathon is concerned!
1/11, 6:30p 16min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strenth+Stretching
1/13, 7a 26.2M Houston Marathon Finish Time: 3:54:21 ( [1:56:21 1:58:00] 5K-Splits: 27:56 27:50 27:19 27:14 27:16 27:11 27:58 28:58 12:39(Residual 2.195k); my splits: 9:05 8:56— 9:01-pace at mile 7; a lot of misplaced mile markers!—, then: 8:28 8:24 8:43 8:39 8:44 8:55 8:57 8:54 9:04 9:05 9:28 9:28 9:17 2:02). Houston, Texas PURFL 9/5 Houston Marathon Photos—best seen as pptx slideshow! T=43-44 H=100% and windy (15 to 30 miles per hour winds); the race started with crazy downpour in the first 15 mimutes—giving nobody a chance to warm up— and then drizzel interrupted with showers in the first half; in the second half it was even more windy but no rain except a little drizzel. I started of slowly the first 7 miles (the plan was to run the first 5 miles at 9:00-pace, the switch to 8:xy-pace with x>1)and then got passed and decided to run with the 3:50 pace group until mile 21; in general, a decent race considering the conditions; the concrete got to me and I got quite sore and my running form became quite bad the last 3 miles losing about 2 minutes, but overall I ran well for 23 miles and was in good spirit the whole race, being happy to finish my 26th marathon! Ran with David Harvey miles 2-5. 56/310a; 1650/6666o; in general, we had 16,800 finishers in both races and not 25000—a lot of people did not show up at the start line; the marathon completion rate of those who started was 93%!
1/16, 6p 18min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching.
1/18, 6p 19min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching;
1/20, 6:30a 10M easy 1:33:22 (9:21-pace) RivOk WR15 4/5 T=48+ and very foggy; not a good run: everything that felt sore during the last 3 miles of the Houston Marathan also felt sore during the last 2 miles of today's run; particularly, my hip, right ancle, and some unknown muscle above the left calf.
1/21, 4p 6M easy 10:32 10:02 9:13 9:10 9:28 9:09 MemPa GLYC 3/6 T=68- and partly cloudy; decided to run on the more "leg and hip-friendly", softer Memorial Park surface; right ancle still sore and does not seem to get better—not sure what to do? Somewhat loosened up after the first 2 miles, running okay.
1/24, 7a 5.3M very easy ... Allen WR15 3/6 T=65+ and foggy; right ancle felt more sore than before.
1/25, 6p 22min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching;
1/26, 7:30a 5.5M easy UH_DT GLYC 3/7 T=62+ and partly cloudy; felt dehydrated during the run; probably, because the Edarbyclor I took the last 2 days. The stray cats were back!
1/27, 6:30a 13M easy 2:00:03 (36:46 24:54 30:08 (10M-loop in 1:31:49) 28:12 (3M)) RivOk WR15 5/6 T=63-65, H=94%; not a good run, but ran the 13 miles, I was supposed to run. rRight ancle not better at all!
1/28, 5:20p 5.3M easy Allen GLYC 3/8 T=76-; H=83+; rare Monday evening run in extremly warm and quiet windy condition.
1/29, 6:40p 24min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching;
1/30, 7a 5.5M easy UH_DT WR15 3/5 ....
1/31 23min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching; 176.4p.
2/1, 3:15p 15.9M easy 2:27:02 (9:14-pace; 31:44 28:12 27:03 28:00 32:06) H-Mem(3)-H GLYC 4/5 T=72-62, H=28-33% partly cloudy and quite windy; conditions were quite warm in the sun in the first 45 minutes, but then a cold wind with increasing stength let the temperature drop by 10 degrees; okay run; the ankle started to feel sore again 30 minutes run and felt quite sore at the end of the run, but after I put it into a bucket of ice for 12 minutes, it felt somewhat better. Rare Friday afternoon run due to the Houston Bridge Regional which will keep me very busy this weekend!
2/3, 6:45a 5.5M easy 50:00 (25:23 24:37) UH_DT WR15 3/5 T=52+, decent run; right ankle was not too bad! 174.4p.
2/4, 6p 25min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching;
2/5, 7a 5.3M easy Allen GLYC 3/7 ....
2/6, 6:45a 5.5M easy ... UH_DT WR15 3/7 T=62+, mostly in drizzel rain.
2/7, 7:30a 7.0M 5x800 f|s 3:59 4:04 4:00 3:57 3:58 MemPa PURFL 4/4 T=60-63, H=94-82% and partly cloudy. First faster run since the marathon; ran better than expected and the right ancle was not as sore as expected after the workout; therefore, I plan to run the Baytown Half Marathon in 9 days! Had breakfast at Sunrise Taquito—having beans, boiled patatoes, eggs, jalapenos and green salsa—after not being there for a long time.
2/9, 6:50a 18M easy 2:46:42 (9:16-pace; 9:34 9:04 9:10) Hershey WR15 7/5 T=54-59, H=88-82 sunny then mostly cloudy and windy; ankle again was a problem, but somehow I found some special ankle-friendly stide, as the course is flat with good footing on the last third of the run. Quite a poor run, but I felt "fresh" during the last 2 miles, indicating that my endurance is good—we better do not talk about my speed! Following the tradition from previous years, having Crab Cakes Benedict after a long run in Terry Heashey Park at The Egg & I at Kirkwood.
2/10, noon 25min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching.
2/11, 6:45a 5.3M easy Allen GLYC 3/7 In quite bad conditions, in pouring rain and ancle-deep water also seeing 9 lightnings; missed the hail which occurred 45 minutes later!
2/12, 5p 6.6M ftl: 8x2min f|s 58:46 UH_DT WR15 4/4 T=62-60, H=82%; run okay considering my blood pressure was 160-83-52 at 8a and 144-82-55 at noon.
2/14, 4:50p 5.3M easy ... Allen GLYC 3/4 T=66-63; H=30%; decent run in decent conditions!
2/16, 8a 5.5M easy ... UH_DT GLYC 3/7 Taking it easy on a nice cold sunny winter day; the stray cats and geese were hanging out togehter again on the grass!
2/16, 12:30p 25min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching;
2/17, 6:30a 10M t: 2.8M 1:27:33 (33:45_l 21:37 (7:47-pace) 32:11) RivOk PURFL 4/4 T=39+ and sunny; did okay on the tempo run, in spite of the fact that I had problems getting started and the absence of water at the gas station. No major problems with the right ankle and left heel, although both are only 90%.
2/18, 6:30p 24min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching.
2/19, 6:30a 20M easy 3:08:45(9:27|9:25) Hershey WR15 7/5 T=54-52-55; H=53-41%, sunny with a quite cold NW wind. Did not run well at all; felt kind of tired, particularly the first 2/3 of the run and my legs were not springy at all. This time having Hiker's Benedict afterwards at The Egg & I at Kirkwood. 174.4p.
2/21, 5p 5.3M very easy ... Allen GLYC 7/3 T=71-70; H=42%, taking it very easy: kind of beaten up after the tough SU/TU-workout; ran poorly the first half, but somewhat faster in the secomd half. 138-82-49; 175.4p.
2/23, 8a 14M Surfside Beach Half Marathon 1:58:17 (9:23 pace the first 8.6 miles and then 8:21-pace the last 4.5 miles.) Surfside, Texas WR15 7/5 T=53-56 H=74-69% cloudy then partly cloudy miles 2-8.5 into a strong 15-20 miles per hour wind; 9/36a 53/337o; took it easy the first 2 miles, and then struggled (similar to Tuesday's run) running into the wind but then, surprisingly, ran the last 4.5 really well in 8:21-pace with tail wind. Compared with Tuesday, much less problems with my sore right ankle. Finished my 207th race and the first one on the beach in this century! In summary, the race turned out to be more fun than I anticipated!
2/24, 4p 24min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching.
2/25, 6p 5.7M easy ... Allen WR16 3/4 T=66+ & drizzel the last 20 minutes; left quad sore; hopefully nothing serios. Due to the construction at Allen Park Way, I developed a new 5.7M running route: home-Stanford-Lamar-Allen_on_south_side_to_pedestrian_bridge- Allen_Loop_to_Hidden_Water_Fountain_near_Waugh-and_back. First Run for WR16. 175.8p.
2/26, 4:30p 5.5M ftl: 7x2min f|s 47:17 UH_DT WR15 4/4 T=61-59, H=30%; ran okay; left quad improved, although still slightly sore. 145-86-48; 176.4p.
2/28, 6:35a 20M easy 3:02:26 (9:07-pace (9:17|8:58); 86:05-44:55(8:59)-...-16:08(8:58)) Hershey WR16 7/5 T=45-48, H=72-59% mostly cloudy running into a very cold wind in the second half the run. Finally, a decent long run; ran the first half kind of slow, but felt quite strong during the second half and after the run: 8:58-pace was decent, considering the wind. 176.6p. This time having Veggie Benedict afterwards at The Egg & I at Kirkwood.
3/2, 8a 5.3M easy Allen GLYC 3/7 T=38+ and sunny, taking it kind of easy.
3/2, 11:30a 25min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching; 135-81-49
3/3, 6:30a 10M t: 2.8M | m:2.2M 1:27:58 (36:40-21:16 (7:40-pace)-18:45(?, to WF)-2:09-9:15) RivOk PURFL 4/4 T=36+ and sunny; ran quite fast after running the first leg with the birthday girl Nancy at about 9:25-pace (also jogged the last mile); did fine in the tempo and then succeeded to keep up with the faster group until the water fountain near Memorial Park. I am happy that I made it through my 46.5M week including 2 speed workouts!!
3/5, 7:15a 5.7M ftl: 8x2min f|s Allen WR16 4/4 T=61-59, and quite windy; temperature dropped by 2 degrees in one hour as the cold front arrived. Took it kind of easy and did not run 2 minute surges all out.
3/5, 11:30a 25min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching; 143-86-44 174.6p.
3/7, 5p 5.5M easy 47:24 (8:37-pace) UH_DT GLYC 3/7 T=64-62, H=50% partly cloudy with cold wind. Ran quite a good pace for an easy run! Last run for GLYC! 7a: 139-82-43 175.8p—Unusually, low pulse rate this week!
3/9, 8a 9.7M Bayou City Classic 10K 50:37 (8:09-pace(8:13|8:04) 8:24(conj.) 8:02 8:12 8:22 7:50 8:06 1:38) Houston, Texas PURFL 7/7 T=64-66, H=88%; 18/64a 320/1668o 189ag; kind of flat and had problems getting going and also felt asleep pace-wise on the fourth mile; picked up the pace nicely on mile 5 but could not maintain the pace til the end; pretty chaotic pacing. Overall, a 5/10 training race! 176.8p (ate and worked too much yesterday).
3/10, 6:30a 14M easy 2:08:53 (9:11-pace 37:01 24:22(8:41-pace) 48:24 (12 miles in 9:08-pace) 19:09 (9:34-pace running the last 2 miles in a rain/hail-storm)) RivOk WR15 7/5 Quite an unusual run; the temperature was 70 at the start and dropped to 55 and mile 13 I was running in my first hail storm in Houston—the hail corns were only small size, but it was definitely hail. Leaving for a cruise from Galveston at 4p to Key West and Bahamas! Last Longer run for WR15!
3/10,4p Start 7-day Cruise going to Key West & the Bahamas!
3/11, 6:10p 4.5M easy 44:32 (22:46 21:46; 32-labs) 225m WR16 3/7 T=72-; in 70km (43miles) per hour wind on a 225 meter rubber(?!?) track on the top of the Carnival Magic. Kind of slow, partially due to the extreme wind!
3/12, 8a 110 minutes Major Walking Key West, FL DEF6 Exploring the spring-break-crowded, very historic, and small (just 2x4 miles) Key West by trolley bus and foot.
3/13, 6:20p 5.8M easy 57:36 (41 labs) 225m WR16 3/7 T=66-; in 50km (31 miles) per hour wind on a 225 meter rubber track on the top of the Carnival Magic. Due to digestive problems based on a bad lunch at Santa Luicida, Grand Bahamas, I needed to take it easy!
3/14, 7a 220 minutes Major Walking Nassau, Bahamas DEF6 Did sightseeing in Nassau, Bahamas and then walked to Paradise Island seeing the Atlantis Aquarium which combines fish (big schools of fish and impressive Stingrays) with archological finds; next, I spend an hour on a beautiful beach called Cabbage Beach, exhibiting very strong waves today; then I continued the walking tour also visiting the Nassau Pirates Museum —according to the exhibits life on a pirate ship was much more fun than life on a merchant's ship which were understaffed and you had to work 24/7 and you were beaten a lot if you did not do so.
3/14, 6:30p 37min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching in Cruise Ship Gym; did 2 additional abdominal and 9 Shoulder/Arm sets.
3/15, 6:10p 6.6M easy 59:31 (47 labs in 8:59-pace) 225m WR16 3/7 T=61-; only 15-20miles per hour wind; alright run in pretty good conditions.
3/16, 6p 42min Y-STR**2 Yoga+Strength+Stretching in Cruise Ship Gym; candle: 4:30 and did 3 additional abdominal and 11 Shoulder/Arm sets.
3/17,9a End 7-day Cruise going to Key West & the Bamahas!
3/17, 10:45a 10M easy 1:36:37 (33:24 30:19 (quite slow!) 32:52) H-Mem(1)-H WR15 3/7 Rare late morning run after coming back from the cruise at 9a! Arm and shoulder muscles feel quite tired after all these sets yesterday. T=73-77; H=70-57; kind of a run with "hand breaks on" in summerly conditions with a lot of sunshine; also had a sore back and the right ankle was sore again. In really warm conditions, as 90% of this route does not have any shade. 134-82-51 174.8p—very surprisingly, did not gain any weight on the cruise; likely due to drinking only water, coffee and red wine and beer and not eating anyhing between the 3 main "big" meals.
3/19, 6:55a 19M easy 3:01:16 (9:34-pace 9:50|9:18) Hershey WR16 7/5 T=64-68 (not 56 as advertized) H=70-43% 15-20 mph wind and partly cloudy. Another slow long run, particularly the first half; weather was so so: quite warm but not very humid! 175.8p.
3/21, 8:10a 5.9M very easy 59:21 St. Louis, Arch Park, MO WR15 3/4 First day of Spring and T=24-25/H=60% with a supercold wind: who can believe that; running twice around St. Louis Arch and on Market Street to 20th street and back. I almost stopped after 20 minutes because my hands were very cold; could not get going due to the cold until the last mile; moreover, had to stop a few times at traffic lights! 176.0p. Some occasional sharp pain in my right toe the last 24 hours—hopefully this is nothing serious!
3/22, 8:30a 7.7M ftl: 8x[3min|2min f|s] 1:07:06 St. Louis, Arch Park, MO WR15 3/4 T=33-34, H=63%, same route as yesterday; ran fine, particularly considering the cold; first 32 Fartlek since a long time!

The course is quite scenic the first 10 miles, with ocean views and nice views of the area running quite high away from the Ocean miles 6-10, also going through a nice ecologically protected area. They had 1879 fishers in the Marathon, but close to 10000 finishers in the Half Marathon with 6000 of those being female. Not a PR-course as the course has 58 official turns, and more than 80 unofficial turns, and at least 5 miles are run on narrow bike paths or going through parking lots and high schools, frequently with no clearly defined running directions and some roads had quite bad footing; it is somewhat hilly, camparable to the Dallas Whiterock Marathon course, except the Dallas course has much fewer turns. In summary, an okay race (should have run 3:48=3:54(Houston Time)-7:00(better shape than Houston)-4:00(better weather than Houston)+5:00(tougher course)) in which I ran poorly the last 4 miles, also lacking the mental toughness I demonstrated in the last miles of the Houston Marathon 4 months ago; on the other hand, the OC course is much tougher than the Houston course, as recent Boston Qualifier rates demonstrate: OC'13=8.0%, HOU'13=10.0%, HOU'12=13.0%, HOU'11=8.0%.
