Be Anywhere Learn Anytime

Hybrid Computer Science Coursework at University of Houston

Jaspal Subhlok, Salvador Baez-Franceschi, Olin Johnson, Joanna Li, Venkat Subramaniam,
Ricardo Vilalta, Chang Yun

  BASIC IDEA:

Full lectures made available on internet as streaming video - can be accessed with a laptop or an iPod

Students must attend some classes - quizzes, demonstrations, tutorial, and hands-on sessions are in class.

  WHY?

Some students have difficulty reaching the classroom. (e.g. students with jobs and caretakers of small children). Make it possible for them to get degrees in a timely fashion.

  HIGHLIGHTS:

    - Classes are recorded with Tablet PC technology. Video contains prepared slides, hand notes and illustrations.
    - Goal is to develop most senior and junior year coursework as hybrid. Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, Computer Networks, Software Engineering courses are being taught; more being developed.
    - Project selected by Texas TWD program as an innovative technology to improve enrollment in Computer Science.
