The Department of Computer Science at the University of Houston was founded in 1967 and was one of the first in the country. Computer science education and research has evolved dramatically in the last 40 years. A recent New York Times article claimed that these days all science is computer science.

The goal of the department is to graduate talented professionals for business and industry and to be a champion in interdisciplinary and innovative research. It requires a strong commitment to collaboration that brings together leaders in two or three specialized fields.

The research of the department is organized into four broad areas:

  • Computer Systems, Architecture, and Networking
  • Image Analysis, Signal Analysis, and Computational Algorithms in Life Science
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining for Science Discovery
  • Theory of Computing

The department strives to enhance the quality of life for individuals, families, communities, and businesses through excellence in teaching, research, and outreach.
