Computer Science Department Unix Primer

Logging In

In order to access Computer Science Department machines from home, you must log in via secure shell to certain hosts that are designated for remote access. Although some machines, e.g. bayou are still accessible over telnet and ftp, we have removed telnet and ftp access to our machines because of the numerous unnecessary security risks entailed. Because secure shell encrypts your username and password before sending it over the network, it is much safer than telnet or ftp.

The login servers for Computer Science are:

For Solaris:
login.cs.uh.edu
For Linux:
linux01.cs.uh.edu through linux04.cs.uh.edu

Note: To access these servers, you must apply for a Computer Science Unix account. Your same account will work on both types of machines above.

For more instructions on getting and using secure shell, see: Secure Shell for Windows and Secure Shell for Unix
