After 1X-1Y-1NT, responder's bids have the following meaning according to the XYZ-structure:
Response |
Meaning |
2C |
Either a signoff in 2D or 3C or any invitational hand. Requests opener to bid 2D which responder may pass, bids 3C to play or follow up with an invitational bid. 2 of the other major shows an invitational hand at least 5-4 in the majors, and 2NT shows an invitational hand with long clubs. |
2D |
Game forcing, responder's hand pattern not yet disclosed, leaving an abundance of bidding space. |
2H/S |
Showing a signoff bid, except responders's reverses are invitational: 1H followed by 2S is invitational with 4-4 in the majors and 1D followed by 2H/2S is invational with 6+D and a 4-card major. |
2NT |
Inviting 3NT, not interested in other contracts. |
3C/D/H/S |
Showing very distributional slam tries with a 7-card or longer suit or 5-5+ distribution. Bidding 2D denies such distributions! |
