Guoning Chen, PI

Guoning Chen is an Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Houston. He earned his Ph. D. degree in Computer Science from Oregon State University in 2009. His research interests include visualization, data analytics, computational topology, geometric modeling, geometry processing and physically-based simulation. He is a member of ACM and IEEE. In this project, he oversees the progress of the entire project and leads the effort of developing an effective framework for the extraction, separation, and tracking of coherent structures in different scales. He also supervises his Ph.D. students to develop effective visual analysis system to aid the exploration and characterization of different coherent structures.

Di Yang, Co-PI

Di Yang is an Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2010. His research interests are computational fluid dynamics, large-eddy simulation and direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows, renewable wind, tidal and wave energy, environmental fluid mechanics, ocean optics, and high-performance scientific computing. In this project, he conducts simulations and data analysis for Langmuir turbulence. He is sharing the data with Dr. Chen's group and providing validation and feedback to the development of the robust and efficient coherent vortex structures.

Rodolfo Ostilla Monico, Former Co-PI, Current Collaborator

Rodolfo Ostilla Monico was an Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston before moving back to Spain. He received his Ph.D. degree in the Physics of Fluids group at the University of Twente. His research is mainly in the field of computational fluid mechanics. He is specifically interested in numerical simulations of convective flows, vortex ring colissions and more generally, of turbulent systems. In this project, he is providing data sets from vortex tubes and homogeneous turbulence for validation and development of the visualization tools.

Ph.D. Students

AdeelZafar

Adeel Zafar

Adeel Zafar joined the project in Spring 2022. He received his bachelor’s degree from XXX and master's degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University. His current research focuses on the robust and efficient extraction of 3D vortices and their separation. He will also develop efficient visual analysis system to help the analysis and interpretation of the behaviors of different vortices.

NguyenPhan

Nguyen K. Phan

Nguyen Phan joined project in Spring 2022. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, Downtown. His current research focuses on effective processing of curve-based vector field data. He is also the main developer of a Client-Server visualization framework that will be used to deploy and disseminate the techniques developed in the project to the experts.
