COSC 4377: Introduction to Computer Networks

Overview

COSC 4377 is a senior level networking course. The goal of this course is to provide foundational knowledge about networking, with a focus on understanding how the various systems that constitute the Internet work.

Required prerequisites

COSC 2310 – Data Structures, and COSC 2410 – Computer Organization and Programming.

Recommended prerequisites

COSC 4330 – Fundamentals of Operating Systems. May be taken concurrently.

Textbook

Computer Networking, 8th edition by James Kurose & Keith Ross

Exams

There are two exams. Mid-term exam will take place during lecture hour. Final exam will take place on Wednesday Dec 14, 2022. There are no make-up exams. The exam will not be administered in-person and will have no online option.

Lectures

Lectures will take place in the classroom and we we will also stream on Microsoft Teams group for the class. The lectures will be recorded and made avaialble in the class channel. There will be 1-3 guest lectures given by industry experts who will discuss new concepts and also relate to how networking skills and knowledge is used in the industry. Dr. Milad Heydariaan is confirmed to speak on 9/26/2022. Other guests will be announced later in the semester.

Homework

Homework will be of three types: book homework; hands-on activities and light programming. We will try to have one homework approximately every week. Late homework submissions will not be accepted.

Emergencies

If you cannot submit your homework, projects or be in class for the exam due to family, personal, or medical emergencies, you must document your case with the appropriate UH officials in advance of the relevant deadlines.

Academic Honesty
