Bio: (CV)

Before joining the University of Houston, Dr. Pâris was faculty at Purdue University and the University of California, San Diego. He received his Ingénieur Civil degree from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, his Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies from the Université de Paris VI, France, his Licence et Maîtrise en Informatique from the Facultés Universitaires de Namur, Belgium and his PhD in EECS from the University of California, Berkeley.

Research:

My background is in applied performance evaluation. I look at problems where the choice of the right policy has a direct impact on the performance of computer systems. Depending of the problem, my co-authors and I have used probabilistic models, discrete-event simulation, and/or trace-driven simulation. My current areas of interest include:

  • Data survivability in storage systems:
    Many organizations now keep on line vast amounts of data for very long periods of time. My work focuses on finding the most cost-effective ways to protect these data against equipment failures such as multidimensional RAID arrays. 

  • Video streaming and video-on-demand:
    I am currently interested in
    client-assisted distribution protocols.

I have openings for master's or doctoral students desirous to take me as an adviser but cannot offer any funding.
