6/30, 6:05a 5.2M easy 52:23 (WA3:) Allen R7 T=77-79, H=94-89%, on traditional route. 180.4p (still 3 extra pounds from my trip to Europe!)
7/2, 6:40a 5.9M ftl: 8x2min f|s 54:04 UH_DT2 DEF7 T=77-78; H=94-93%; ran okay considering the conditions.
7/4, 6:30a 20M 17.3M easy 3:13:32 (51:47(LH_Dam) 1:48:23 (one loop); Run 1.55M, Walk 4.0M, ran last 1.55M in 9:00-pace) Town Lake Loop Trail, Austin, Texas WR16' T=75-81 H=86-71%; could not pull the 20M run off, also due to some digestive problems in the first 90 minutes of the run, and, in general, I was not feeling great, ending up walking 4M; moreover, as my pace was very slow, I was additionally worried to miss the start of the Germany-France Soccer Worldcup Game (I watched it later at Scholz Garten with the Austin German Language Meetup Group, having Jaeger Schnitzel and Franciskaner Hefeweizen for breakfast) if I would run something close to 20M. Not a good run; will try to run 18M on my last long longrun before SF next Friday.
7/6, 7:00a 5.6M easy 53:10 NE Austin R7 T=77-79; H=89-86%; starting from the Doubletree Austin going Posada-CamCosta-Bennet-SanJohn-Berkeman-ColoradoHill-OldTown and back with a 6 min. addon along Berkeman; felt somewhat goofy during the first 30 minutes of the run.
7/7, 6:30a 5.4M easy 51:15 (9:17-pace; 1M at 8:40-pace) AllenR DEF7 T=77 H=89%; decent run! 181.0p; need to lose 5 pounds in the next 14 days!!
7/7, 6:50p 37min Swimming Rare double workout!
7/9, 6p 6.6M easy 1:04:49 (39:46(end_of_oven) 42:56(water fountain) WA2:) RiceBraes PURFL T=91-86; H=46-62%; 8mph wind; in quite warm conditions, although the wind and low hum. helped a little; on the BCRR Wednesday 6.57M Route; made it through the Braes Bayou Oven without walking: an accomplishment considering the temperature! 180.8p
7/11, 6:25a 18M easy 3:14:05 (first 12.5M in 2:00:57 (9:36-pace) and then walked the remaining 5.5M except I ran 2x0.6M at the end of miles 17 and 18) Hershey DEF7 T=79-87(!), H=85-72%. Strangely enough, I had a good workout; succeeded to run the first 12.5 in very challenging conditions in an acceptable pace, demonstrating good form and endurance, and then walked for 4.3M total, when the temparature climbed above 83, but I still ran 1.2M near the end of the run with the temperature at the finish line being 87 at 9:50a!!
7/12, 7:30a 45min Swimming Pool closed for 2 weeks, due to telephone problem!! This concludes a very short Swimm Season I; Swimming Season II will start on September 8 and end on November 2!
7/13, 6:30a 10M t: 2.8M 1:34:47 (38:10 (slowest first leg lifetime!!) 24:04 (8:39-pace!) 32:32 (slow again!)) RivOK LAU T=77-83; H=95-85%. Regular BCRR Sunday run; had some digestive problems in the begining and also still felt beaten up from Friday's run; therefore I ran the first leg quite slowly, but then ran the 2.8M second leg only 20 seconds over T-pace, and then took it easy again. My training was not perfect, but anyhow: San Francisco here I come!!
7/14, 6:35a 5.4M easy 53:51 AllenR WR16' T=79-80, H=91-86%; took it very easy this morning!
7/16, 6p 6.6M easy 1:05:19 (40:06 (end-of_oven)-43:16(WaFou)) RiceBraes R7 Partly cloudy after some drizzel rain 2-4p; T=82-84 H=83-76%; relaxed run; felt much better than one week ago, although I was 30 seconds slower today; probably, should have run harder; the R7 shoe felt alright for faster running.
7/18, 7:25a 5.3M ftl: 10.5x 2:00 f|s Allen LAU T=82-83; H=91-87%; kind of flat particularly feeling stiff and tired; decided to walk the last 4 2-minute easy sections; tightness and slight pain on the bottom or below the right(!) calf.
7/19, 9a 200 minutes Major Hiking 10.1M Pasadena, Texas. SPC3 With Houston Trails & More Meetup Group; 181.8p!
7/20, 6:30a 10M easy 1:40:08 (39:39 (slowest ever); 26:54 (9:35-pace) 33:34); RivOK PURFL T=74-76; H=95-91%; really slow and kind of tight after the 10M walk yesterday; soreness under the right calf turned out not to be a major factor—although it hurt 2-3 times during the run—providing some relief of worries concerning causing trouble during the San Francisco Marathon; last run for PURFL!
7/23, 6:55a 7.4M easy 1:09:21 (averaging 9:20-pace; 34:25|34:56 uphill going back) East Las Vegas R7 T=90-94; H=12-8%; going KarenSt_W-Paradise_N-EastSahara_E slightly past Boulder Hwy and back turning on Palm Streat (almost made it to HW 515) and back on a day where the high was 111.1F at 4p—running in Las Vegas is summer is definitely not easier compared to running in high humidity in Texas, as the temperature here is 10-15 degrees higher than in Texas. Sahara Av. definitely deserved its name today: it felt like running in the Sahara desert!
7/22+23+24 80+120+100 minutes Major Walking 14M Las, Vegas Nevada Getting everywhere in Las Vegas by foot! Saw the Blue Man Group at the Monte Carlo Hotel; their show was good, but not too different from their show I saw 2 years ago...
7/26, 11:45a 2.0M jog & stretch! San Francisco, California R7 Seeing the Homemade Jamz Blues Band from Tupolo, Mississippi at Biscuits and Blues the night before—a talented young band consisting of 2 brothers and a sister; particularly, the lead gitarist played exceptionally well, and I therefore bought their newest CD.
7/27, 6:02a 29.7M San Francisco Marathon 4:46:49 (2:07:18|2:39:31 28:56 (3M) 9:22 9:44 20:22 28:58 (3M) 8:47 (10M in 1:45:47) 10:15 11:26 (13.1M in 2:07:23) 8:07 (14M in 2:15:20) 11:00 35:07 23:55 24:40 25:49 14:11 16:34 (last 1.21M); official timing: 2.1 Mi: 19:45 Pace: 9:24, 5.5 Mi: 52:09 Pace: 9:29, 7.4 Mi: 1:12:15 Pace: 9:45, Half: 2:07:18 Pace: 9:42, 17.1 Mi: 2:51:34, Pace: 10:02, 23.5 Mi: 4:09:17 Pace: 10:36) SF, California LAU T=59-62(8a)-73(10:50a); H=89-89-66%; overcast with light drizzel in the first 20 minutes and somewhat foggy over the Golden Gate Bridge: then partly cloudy after 2 hours; wind less than 2mph; finishing my 218th race life time and my 29th marathon (running 32 total so far with 3 DNFs); 32/94a, 3657/6580o; left quad started to feel very sore at mile 12, and the left hip felt tight soon after; kind of fell apart after 16M run-walking the last 10M; I guess the quad, the unusually warm weather for SF (last year the temperature at 6a was 54 and the temperature at 10:50a was 62!!), the lack of training runs of 20M and longer and of hilly training runs, and the 6 pound weight gain during the Germany/Austin 3 week trip all contributed to today's poor finish time!
7/25+28+29 80+110+130 minutes Major Walking 16M San Francisco, California Went to AT&T Park (by foot) on Monday seeing the Giants badly losing to the Pirates (almost no offense) but enjoyed the nice views of the San Francisco Bay from the open air studium, and did a hope-on-off bus tour on Tuesday, seeing the Asian Art and de Young Museum, the places where the hippies lived, Marine county (over the Golden Gate Bridge again!), Fisherman's Wharf, and China Town, buying some Yunnan tea.
7/31, 7:30p 38min Swimming Rare crosstrain swimm in late July! 182.6p.
8/2, 7:20a 43min Swimming Another crosstrain swimm due to having 6 restdays after the SF Marathon.
8/3, 6:30a 10M easy 1:54:12 (36:54 26:52 (9:34-pace) walked the last 3M!); RivOK WR16' T=73-75; H=95-92%; left quad was still tight and somewhat sore, but not as sore as during the SF Marathon; decided that 7 miles of running on the tight and somewhat sore quad should be the limit for today and walked the last 3 miles! 182.2p
8/5, 6:50a 5.0M easy 9:40-pace; walked last M AllenR DEF7 T=76+ H=89%; quad felt better but not 100% okay, but after running 3M my left calf started to feel tight and sore, and I decided to walk the last mile, also short cutting the run.
8/7, 8:10a 5.9M 47min Running Swimming Tried to run, but after running 5 minutes the left calf felt the same as at the end of Tuesday's run, and decided to swimm instead; will try running again Sunday morning.
8/9, 8:20a 48min Swimming Another crosstrain swimm due to the sore and tight calf. 179.4p.
8/10, 6:35p 3.2M easy Run for 2M and then walked! AllenR DEF7 T=88-; quad felt better, but left calf felt fine for 2 miles, but then got tight and sore again and I was forced to shorten the workout and to walk home.
8/12, 6:50p 47min Swimming Another crosstrain swimm due to the sore and tight calf. Pushed the pace well during the second half of today's swimm. 180.8p.
8/13, 6:15p 3.6M easy Run for 2M and then walked! Allen WR16' T=89- with low hum.; same as Sunday: calf felt fine for 2 miles, but then got tight and sore again and I was forced to shorten the workout and to walk home. I guess I will not run for 3 days!
8/15+16 50+90 minutes Major and Minor Hiking 6.5M Boulder, Colorado Walking the Lefthand Tail and the Canyon Trail at Betasso Preserve.
8/16, 5p 70min Dancing To the music of Liquid Soul at the 4th Niwot Jazz Festival on 2nd Avenue.
8/17, 7:10a 6.1M easy on trail 1:07:22 (34:47 32:35) Ron's house on Sage/Eagle trail to Eagle Trail Trailhead, Boulder DEF7 Succeeded to finish the run with my left calf not bothering too much this time although it felt tight and the left quad also does not seem to be 100% yet. Ran okay in the second half, doing well to run the 1000 meter climb without stopping!
8/19, 7:10a 5.3M easy on steap trail 56:26 Ron's house on up Eagle trail also passing the water tower and 0.25 miles on the Digge trail and back. DEF7 Could not quite run the whole 1.5M somewhat challenging hill as I was breathing too hard, and had to throw in a 2 minute walking break; no problems with the left calf today, but the left quad felt quite sore the first 5 minutes, but then miraculuously the pain disappeared!
8/20, 9:45a 150+30minutes Major Hiking 7M Aspen, Colorado Going from the Maroon Bells to Crater Lake (59 minutes up, 52 minutes down with a little extra hiking around Crater Lake), which is above 10,000 feet, on a quite rocky and often wet trail, having beautiful views of three 14,000+ foot mountains, in partly cloudy conditions, after it had rained for 24 hours until 9a in Aspen. Took the Gondola up Aspen Mountain in the late afternoon, and what the top of this mountain briefly.
8/21, 6:05a 7.5 5.0M easy Rio Grande Trail, Aspen, Colorado DEF7 Running on the paved, mostly flat Rio Grande Trail which starts in Aspen and goes all the way to Glenwood Springs. Unfortunately, after doing fine on the two trail runs and the hike on Wednesday, my left calf felt tight and sore again after running 2 miles, and I decided to shorten the run, which was going on a scenic trail mostly along the Roaring Fork River.
8/23, 7:55a 53min Swimming 180.6p.
8/24, 7:20a 5.1M easy 52:51 (5.1M; then walked) UH_DT2 WR16' T=77-84, H=97=83%, sunny; calf felt somewhat tight after 2M but did not get worse; however, left quad did like the uphills in the second half, and considering the circumstances, I decided running 5.1M today is more than plenty!
8/28, 6:55a 5.4M easy 56:58 AllenR WR16' T=77-78 H=94-93%; makeup run for the cancelled runs yesterday and Tuesday due to bad allergies; felt somewhat exhausted during the run—perhaps I was not 100% recovered—but finished the run without walking. No problems with the left calf, but the left quad is still somewhat sore. 179.0p.
8/29, 6:20p 5.3M easy 53:35 (WA2:) Allen DEF7 T=82-79, H=82-86%; had a much better run today compared to yesterday, and ran the last 2M in about 9:20-pace, taking a 2 minute walking break after completing the first faster mile. Still having significant congestion, causing bad coughing off and on.
8/30, 7:20a 47min Swimming
8/31, 7:05a 10M easy 1:39:09 (9:55-pace; 33:52 30:12 35:05) H-Mem(1)-H WR16' T=77-79-76; H=93%+; cloudy, then miles 4-8 and 10 in pouring rain; ran pretty well considering the layoffs, my lack of recent longer training runs and the very bad footing, particularly in Memorial Park where the trail very quickly turned into a lake; my pace was also okay, except I was really getting tired near the end slowing down significantly on the last mile.
9/1, 6:55p 5.2M easy 59:38 (ran 40 minutes in 9:50-pace, and then walked) AllenR DEF7 T=89-87, H=67+% and partly cloudy; was able to run for 40 minutes in those cruel conditions, but then I felt completly exhaused and walked the remainder of the distance; an okay effort, inspite of the walking! Quite a recovery; after I could not run for 3 days due to allegies, I succeed to workout for 5 consecutive days swimming once and running 4 times. 178.6p.
9/2, 6:50p 47min Swimming Finally, after a lot of layoffs, this completes six consecutive days of workouts: 2x(Run@a-Run@p-Swimm).
9/4, 6:45a 5.4M t:11:30-w:5:00-t:8:45 54:04 AllenR WR16' T=79-82; H=93-90%; ran okay considering the conditions, but running faster for 20 minutes felt really very demanding—perhaps I have relearn to run faster again! 179.4p.
9/6, 8:30p(!) 7.7M Galveston Sand Crab Night Beach 10K Run 58:32 (9:25-pace; 9:11 9:14 9:40(sw) 9:34(sw) 9:22 9:41 1:48) Porretto Beach, Galveston DEF7 T=86-85; H=79%; on beach at night; first run with a headlamp (Petzl Tikka R+); footing on mile 3 and 4 was not very good as the beach was covered with a lot of seaweed, and the mosquitos on Porretto Beach were horrible—counted more than 70 mosquito bites after the race, and the headlamp attracted all kind of other insects flying around my head, somewhat bothering me during the race! Ran okay considering the conditions and layoffs in August, except I somewhat slow on the last mile and was not able to pick up the pace; nice Texas Barbeque and a very good band (The Inter... ... Renegades) played until 11p, giving a great interpretation of Van Morrison's/Jimmy Hendrix's Gloria (Jimmy Hendrix's Gloria Video). 2/5a 23/77o.
9/7, 7:20a 4.8M easy 46:23 Seawall, Galveston R7 T=81-82; H=90%; took it somewhat easy!
9/8, 6:40p 5.3M easy 52:22 (WA3:) Allen WR16' T=88-87, H=63-65% and mostly cloudy; had to prerun the Tuesday morning run due to too many things I have to do Tuesday morning at work. Pretty decent run pacewise, considering the extremely warm but medium humidity conditions! 178.6p.
9/10, 6:00a(!) 10M easy 1:37:01 (9:42-pace; first 9.3M in 1:29:09 at 9:34-pace W:3 before running the last half mile quite fast; 34:11 (in dark with headlamp) 28:57 33:49) H-Mem(1)-H R7 T=79-82; H=92-87% and sunny; was feeling not too good halfway, but was surprisingly able to maintain a decent pace for 9.3M, walked for 3 minutes and then finished strong; moreover, I was sweeting too much this morning.
9/11, 6:55a 5.4M easy 55:43 (W3:) AllenR WR16' T=79-82 H=92-89%; partly cloudy; not running well today! Ran 6 of 8 days in very bad September weather conditions in all six runs!
9/13, 8a 170 minutes Major Hiking 8.8M Lone Star Trail. HB Made a loop starting from Trailhead 2 on a drizzly day with temperatures around 70; with Houston Trails & More Meetup Group; 180.6p!
9/14, 7:25a 6.7M easy 64:29 UH_DT3 DEF7 T=66, H=96%; finally, a run in much much colder, although humid conditions! Right hip sore after workout.
9/15, 6:40p 5.3M easy 49:37 (9:23-pace) Allen WR16' T=86- H=66%+ and partly cloudy; ran a good clip today! 181.2p.
9/18, 6:40a 13M easy 2:15:04 (36:04 (dark, mud) 29:51 29:16 (9:52-pace for 6M) 39:53(walked 1.3M)) H-Mem(2)-H DEF7 T=77-81, H=99-96% and mostly cloudy; after being sick with some kind of stomach problem the day before; never felt good and also quite tired in a run in difficult, extremely humid conditions; kind of cratered after 9.5M and run-walked the last 3.5M.
9/20, 7:15a 5.2M very easy 55:35 Allen R7 T=73-76, H=94% and mostly sunny; felt kind of stiff (need to resume my stretching regime) particularly the hip, and decided to take it easy being further slowed down by a lot of mud crossings after a lot of rain.
9/21, 7:05a 10M easy 1:36:33 (9:39-pace; 34:49 28:55 32:38) H-Mem(1)-H DEF7 T=74-79, H=97-87% and sunny; okay but not good run; felt like walking after 8M but resisted the temptation!
9/22, 6:10p 5.3M easy 49:39 Allen WR16' T=84-83, H=77% and mostly sunny; okay run on an intially very warm day, but the temperature then dropped due to strong thunderstorms between 4p and 5p. 179.6p.
9/24, 6:05p 6.2M ftl: 8x2min f|s 58:04 Allen LAU T=79-77; H=62% and mostly cloudy; first faster run, since 2 months; ran okay considering that I had to run faster the first time after a long layoff.
9/26, 6:05p 5.9M easy 55:30 UH_DT2 WR16' T=81-80, H=65%; ran okay in the third evening run, after a tiring sequence of 6 days with no-stop grant writing. 181.6p; also ate too much the last 3 days!
9/27, 7:20a 43min Swimming T=72, the water felt surprisingly fresh! First swimm after a 25 day interuption.
9/28, 6:30a 15M easy 2:31:23 (pace excluding mile 14 9:38; 46:36 (long) 26:48 (9:34-pace) 22:48 (9:37-pace for 10 miles) 20:26 (10:10-pace) 9:30 15:46(walked) 9:27). RivOkMem R7 T=72-77; H=88-82%; this run felt really hard; started to feel beaten up after 10 miles, and walked mile 14, but ran miles 13 and 15 in a decent pace but testing my limits in doing that.
9/29, 6:45p 44min Swimming ...
9/30, 6:10p 5.3M easy 52:06 (WA3:) Allen WR16' T=83-82, H=84% and mostly cloudy; did not run well in warm and very humid conditions; probably, was not 100% recovered from the challenging run on Sunday!
10/1, 5:53p 6.8M easy 1:05:45 (42:04(End_Ov)-45:07(Wa_Stop)-57:26(Entr_Rice)) RiceBraes R7 T=89-86; H=68-71% and sunny; had a really good run considering the really warm conditions on variation of the BCRR Wednesday 6.57M Route going north on Morningside and east on Swift which makes the run a little longer; began my run 7 minutes before the "field" started, and very few caught me today! Moreover, the strong head wind and occasional (Fall only) shade along Braes Bayou helped to make this run more tolerable; time for a restday, after having workouts for 6 consecutive days: run-swimm-run-swimm-run-run
10/3, 6:55a 5.4M very easy AllenR WR16' T=69-67, H=99%; over a lot of mud; took it very easy after having some digestive problems the evening before. 180.4p.
10/4, 5:35p 6.9M t: 3.125M 1:00:55 (25:24-26:19[21:07(UH_DT-WS)-RE1:-5:12(to_Long_BB_Br)]-9:12) UH_DT3 LAU T=75-74; H=35-37%; due to the ideal Fall weather conditions, I decided to move the run from the morning to the afternoon; decent workout after a 66.4% Bridge game in Studio with John Du Bose. First time using the "new" tempo run toute: UH_Down_Town-Long_Buffala_Bayou_Bridge; estimated length: 3.125M, but might be slightly shorter?!?
10/6, 7:05a 16.7M (gracious estimate based on effort; I actually ran only 15.7M) easy 2:42:46 (1:23:00 | 1:19:46) on beach with water carrier! Surfside Beach going north-east towards Galveston and back R7 T=74-81; H=87-81%; 6-11mph SE-wind (mostly cross wind) mostly cloudy with 3 short baby rain showers; turned around 6 minutes too early to actually run 17M as my pace was slower than I thought probably due to water carrier and the occasionally challenging footing; does not seem too easy to run a straigth line on the beach; anyway, a good run particularly as felt "good" at the end and was able to pick up the pace on the last 4 miles of the run.
10/7, 7:25p 39min Swimming
10/8, 6:25p 5.3M ftl: 15x1min f|s Allen DEF7 T=84-82 H=78-80%; workout felt really hard; perhaps I am not used to running faster in quite warm and humid conditions! 179.4p.
10/10, 7:15a 5.5M easy 50:30 (25:50|24:30) UH_DT WR16' T=79-80, H=93-90%; was sweating a lot and running 9:12-pace was quite challenging in those difficult conditions. Last run for WR16', a nice light shoe; unfortunately, I seem to be between sizes for the new WR17 model...
10/12, 7:00a 10.8M Space City 10-Miler 1:29:00 (8:54-pace 45:17|43:43; 9:20 9:00 8:55 9:02 8:55 8:44 8:48 8:35 8:58 8:38) UH Clear Lake, Texas LAU T=69-71; H=95-96%. Ran very conservatively, also as my left hamstring&quad felt very tight before the race and during the first mile of the race, and I was worried about pulling a muscle, but then the problem disappeared; should have picked up the pace near the end as I still felt alright and lacked mental toughness the last 3 miles, but the very high humidity was definitely a challenge today. Outer right ankle felt somewhat sore after the race. 11/24a 224/566o.

Really a good debut for the Boston Boost 5; should have retired the Brook Launch from racing earlier: as it has too much cushioning and is too soft, for my taste! 176/884o, 6/32a.
11/28, 4:45p 5.5M easy 50:35 UH_DT DEF7 T=67+ and partly cloudy; rare lunch time run; I still felt quite beaten up from yesterday's race which was not surprising due to the fact not having run 8:00-pace for 9 months; anyhow, still succeeded to run an "okay pace". 178.8p.
11/30, 6:30a 20M easy 3:24:08 (basically, 17M in 9:48-pace, and then run/walked the last 3 miles) Hershey R7 T=65-74; H=90-75%; did not run well the last fifth of the run in warm conditions, although I ran somewhat okay the first 16 miles, but then felt quite beaten up and tired the last three miles. Probably, the facts that the last 20 miler was only 9 days ago, and doing 2 hard runs on Sunday and Thursday might explain today's fading. Left Achilles tendon was feeling sore off and on during the run: should ice it in the next week as a precaution!
12/2, 6:35a 5.5M very easy 56:53 AllenR DEF7 T=45+ and cloudy; decided to take it easy today, due to the left Achilles tendon problems, I faced on Sunday; however, after 3 sets of icing in the last 36 hours the tendon felt mostly okay today!

Got a wine glass and nice barbeque and free beer and wine after the race; they had 240+145(10K)=385 finishers in 2014; might run the face again some day!
